What Is Kyuki-Do?

Kyuki-Do is a dynamic martial art that blends Taekwondo, Hapkido, and Judo into a system designed to build strength, confidence, and character. Introduced to the United States in 1967 by Grand Master Ok Hyung Kim, Kyuki-Do emphasizes personal growth over competition. The ultimate goal is not victory or defeat but the perfection of character.

At Escambia Martial Arts, Kyuki-Do is taught through age-appropriate programs like Little Dragons (ages 4–6) and Dragons (ages 7–12), each designed to help students grow physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will My Child Become a Bully?

Absolutely not. A core part of our Little Dragons Program is teaching respect, self-control, and emotional awareness. Students learn when to use their self-defense skills and when not to. As they grow in confidence, they become more capable of standing up to bullies, while also developing humility, kindness, and empathy through their martial arts journey.

Are Parents Allowed to Watch?

Yes! We encourage parents to watch their children during martial arts classes. Your presence supports their growth and shows that you value their effort. Even better join one of our adult classes and train alongside them. Sharing this experience builds a strong family bond and gives you something powerful in common.

Do I Need to Be Fit for This?

Not at all. Students begin at all fitness levels, and our classes are designed to help you improve at your own pace. You’ll find that training is a fun, engaging workout that delivers real results. Whether you're just starting or returning to fitness, Kyuki-Do meets you where you are and helps you grow stronger every day.

How Long Until I Get My Black Belt?

The journey to Black Belt is personal and unique for every student. Progression depends on dedication, consistency, and mindset not speed. There’s no judgment on how long it takes. What we can promise is this: It’s worth it.  The self-defense skills you’ll master can be life-saving. But even more powerful are the lessons in perseverance, commitment, and self-discipline qualities that lead to lifelong success.

I'm Not Very Sporty or Coordinated. Will That Be a Problem?

Not at all. Many of our adult students felt the same way before they started. Our instructors are trained to keep things simple and supportive, helping every student build confidence and coordination over time. Give yourself a chance you’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve. Even the most hesitant beginner can develop ninja-like skills with the right guidance!

What Do I Need to Bring to My First Martial Arts Lesson?

Just a few essentials:

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in (no skirts or restrictive outfits)

  • A water bottle to stay hydrated

  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn!

We’ll take care of the rest. Your journey starts the moment you step on the mat.
